Job Description Summary
Aircraft Painters play a critical role in delivering high-quality finishes on aircraft parts and completed aircraft exteriors. This position is responsible for surface preparation, paint application, and maintaining a safe and organized paint environment, ensuring all work meets strict design, quality, and aerospace industry standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned):
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, with a strong focus on paint booth operations and compliance with safety regulations
Mix primers, sealants, and topcoat paints in accordance with manufacturer specifications and technical data sheets
Prepare parts for paint application, including cleaning, sanding, masking, and surface treatment
Load, unload, plug, and mask aircraft components to protect critical surfaces and ensure proper coating application
Apply primers and topcoats using spray equipment, ensuring uniform coverage and proper thickness
Inspect painted surfaces for defects such as runs, sags, or inconsistencies and perform touch-ups or rework as needed
Read and interpret job travelers, engineering drawings, and work instructions to ensure compliance with Type Design and quality requirements
Verify proper curing processes and environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.) for paint applications
Clean, inspect, and maintain spray guns, hoses, booths, and other painting equipment to ensure optimal performance
Accurately document work performed, including materials used, batch numbers, and inspection results
Communicate the status of work-in-progress and expedited parts to downstream teams to support production flow and scheduling
Collaborate with quality, engineering, and production teams to resolve discrepancies and improve processes
Follow all FAA, OSHA, and company safety and quality standards
Apply Lean Manufacturing principles, including 5S and Six Sigma methodologies, to improve safety, quality, efficiency, and cost
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement within paint processes and workflow
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum of 5 years of experience in aerospace or automotive painting
Aerospace painting experience strongly preferred, including familiarity with FAA standards and aircraft coatings
Strong knowledge of paint systems, surface preparation techniques, and coating application methods
Experience working with technical specifications, job travelers, and engineering drawings
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and general computer applications for documentation and communication
Ability to read, interpret, and follow detailed written and verbal instructions
Strong mathematical skills, including the ability to calculate ratios for paint mixing and work with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals
High attention to detail with a commitment to producing consistent, high-quality work
Demonstrated analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
Ability to accurately track and manage alphanumeric data and production documentation
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, production-driven environment
Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate effectively with cross-functional teams
Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles (5S, Six Sigma) preferred
Ability to stand, bend, lift, and perform physically demanding tasks as required in a manufacturing environment
Willingness to work flexible hours or overtime as needed to meet production deadlines
